Katarina Wit started skating when she was five years old. It was her chance to demonstrate her skills and get into a Karl-Marx-Stadt special school for gifted kids. She got to know Jutta Muller here. Witt was able to make her mark in the second position she placed at the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. The grace and elegant style of Witt drew the attention of all and she has been a dominant figure skater ever since. Olympic Erfolg At the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for figure skating in women's in a highly competitive contest. After four years, the event, she was able to take home an even tighter race. The free skate she took was a loss, but her gold medal resulted from the performances she made in both the compulsory figures (short programme) as well as the mandatory figures. Witt was the first woman to be a repeated winner of figure skating, following Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame After enjoying the success of an actress, Witt returned to the figure skating sport to take part in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. Although she didn't win a medal, Witt delighted her fans despite coming in seventh. The year 1995 was the year that Witt received her induction into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
